Project Overview

One calculator, multiple ways to solve a problem

Smart Calculator is an Android application project designed to provide standard arithmetic and scientific calculations in a single interface. The implementation uses a Jetpack Compose UI and separates calculator functionality into maintainable components.

The current feature scope includes scientific operations, a calculation-history experience backed by Room, and calculator memory controls. The app is intended to be useful for everyday calculations as well as technical and learning scenarios.

Key Features

Designed for daily and scientific calculations

A feature-focused overview of the current project scope.

Standard Calculator

Perform everyday arithmetic operations in a straightforward calculator interface.

Scientific Functions

Includes sine, cosine, square root, square, logarithm, natural logarithm, factorial, and power operations.

Calculation History

Room-backed history functionality helps retain and revisit previous calculations.

Memory Controls

MC, MR, M+, and M− controls support clearing, recalling, adding to, and subtracting from calculator memory.

Separate Calculator Modes

The interface is designed to support calculator types with a standard calculator as the default mode.

Modern Android UI

Built with Kotlin and Jetpack Compose for a native Android user experience.

Scientific Calculator

Beyond basic arithmetic

Scientific operations extend the calculator for students, developers, and technical users. Confirm the supported angle mode and edge-case handling in the app before publishing these details as final specifications.

Sine (sin)
Cosine (cos)
Square root (√)
Square (x²)
Logarithm (log)
Natural log (ln)
Factorial (n!)
Power (xʸ)

Example validation

Input

sin(30)

Expected result in degree mode

0.5

The project's previously tested sine example returned 0.5 for sin(30). Include a screenshot or test evidence if you publish this as a project achievement.

Technology Stack

Native Android implementation

The project uses Android development technologies to structure the interface, application state, and local calculation history.

Kotlin

Primary application language

Jetpack Compose

Declarative UI toolkit

Room

Local database for history

ViewModel

UI state and lifecycle-aware logic

Testing & Quality

Validate the important calculation paths

The project has had successful build and feature-test iterations, including a sine-function check. Use the checklist below to guide future manual and automated validation; only mark cases as passed when you have tested them on the current build.

  • Basic arithmetic and operator precedence
  • Scientific functions and angle mode
  • Division by zero and invalid input
  • Factorial limits and negative values
  • Memory controls: MC, MR, M+, M−
  • Save, display, and clear calculation history
  • State restoration after rotation or app restart
  • Small-screen layout and accessibility

Potential Next Steps

Ideas for future releases

These are possible enhancements, not claims about existing functionality.

Unit Conversion

Add common engineering and everyday unit conversions.

Programmer Calculator

Explore binary, octal, decimal, hexadecimal, and bitwise operations.

Export & Share

Offer safe sharing or export of selected calculation history.

Accessibility

Improve TalkBack support, contrast, and touch target sizing.

Localization

Consider regional number formatting and additional languages.

Automated Tests

Expand unit and UI tests for operations and edge cases.
